Blog Post: May 2: Florida Safety & Career Day

posted Tuesday, April 29, 2008 10:23 PM

More than 5,000 Miami-Dade highs school and college students are expected to attend the Ninth Annual State of Florida Safety & Career Day Parade and Exposition being held on Friday, May 4, 2007, at the State of Florida Regional Service Center, located at 401 NW 2 Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.   For the first time, the event will include “ Aviation Way ,” a special display area where the Federal Aviation Administration will host Miami-Dade Police Department’s Air Rescue, Homeland Security’s Black Hawk, Miami Children’s Hospital Life Flight and the United States Coast Guard’s Search and Rescue.   The grand opening of Aviation Way will take place between 9 and 9;30 a.m., with a ribbon cutting ceremony conducted by former State Senator, Daryl  Jones. The interactive, informative, and fun-filled career day event will commence with opening speakers, Mayor Carlos Alvarez and Miami Children’s Hospital CEO Thomas Rozek, who will speak to inspire local youth to look at careers in one of the many agencies represented at the annual event and start planning for success.

The parade will include Grand Marshal and National TV show personality, Judge Greg Mathis. The procession will feature an array of motorcycles, boats, rescue vehicles, fire trucks and local high school marching bands.  Starting at 8:30 a.m., the convoy will move through Downtown Miami, from Biscayne Blvd. and E. Flagler west and around to the State of Florida Regional Service Center.

“Our goal is to get the agencies more directly involved with our local community – especially our children – to help provide information as to who we are, what we do,” says Committee Chair Byron Smith.   “We aspire to plant a seed of hope for a successful future by showcasing the opportunities available through the many exciting and rewarding careers within government.”

Needless to say, Jobing.com will be there. The event is a huge opportunity for local educational organizations to introduce students to careers in government and to get acquainted with the variety of government agencies.  I do look forward to seeing you there as well.

Archaeological research indicates that Florida had been inhabited for thousands of years before any European settlements. Of the many indigenous peoples, the largest known were the Ais, the Apalachee, the Calusa, the Timucua and the Tocobago tribes.

Miami (pronounced /maɪˈæmi/ or /maɪˈæmə/) is a global city[4] in southeastern Florida, in the United States. Miami is the county seat of Miami-Dade County, the most populous county in Florida. With an estimated population of 409,719 in 2007,[1] Miami is the largest city within the Miami metropolitan area, which is the seventh-largest metro area in the United States with over 5.4 million residents.[5] The Miami Urbanized Area (as defined by the Census Bureau) was the fifth most populous urbanized area in the U.S. in the 2000 census with a population of 4,919,036.[6] The United Nations estimated that in 2007, Miami had become the fourth largest urbanized area in the United States, behind New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago.[
