Blog Post: Beyond the unemployment rate

posted Sunday, October 19, 2008 6:40 PM

Every month, the Department of Labor releases the latest figures regarding employment trends throughout the U.S.   Although we are living the reality to the economic and employment trends every day, I do look forward to receiving this report to unearth any ray of hope.  Call me an optimist. However, there are always opportunities coming our way, even when these are disguised in bad news.  So, what did I learned from this month's report?

  • There have been very little change in the unemployment rates of the tri-county area over the past month. Broward County ’s jobless rate held steady in September and dipped slightly in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, according to Florida ’s Agency for Workforce Innovation.
  • In Broward, the jobless rate remained at 6.1 percent in September (compared to 3.9 percent a year ago)
  • In Palm Beach , the unemployment rate went down a bit – from 7.3 percent, from 7.4 percent in August.
  • In Miami-Dade, the unemployment rate was 6 percent, down from 6.2 percent the previous month.

Although the construction industry accounted for 40.5 percent of the job losses in the state, education and health services ranked first among Florida ’s major industries in the number of new jobs. Time to reinvent yourself?

There is no magic bullet. There are more candidates available for each available position. Now more than ever, the power of a strong network and the importance of the unique skills we bring to the table are the best tools to survive these changing times. Whether in career transition or in a steady job, continue building your professional network, attend or join professional associations, join a volunteer organization or even consider attending a self-help workshop. Keep a positive attitude – it is best medicine to navigate uncertain times.  When least expected, new opportunities will be more visible and accessible than before.  Best of success!
