Blog Post: Economic Downtime for the Small Business Owners

posted Tuesday, February 24, 2009 4:33 PM

During this economic downtime, I ask the following questions:

1) How is the small business owner dealing with these difficult times?

2) What is the small business owner doing to ensure they are in compliance with all of the employment laws?

3) Does the small business owner even know that they may not be in compliance?

As I sit here composing this blog, I find myself wondering how the small business owner is dealing with "life" in these difficult times. I know many say they "refuse to participate in this recession". Let's face it, everyone is being affected during these times.

I was blessed with the opportunity to start a wholesale company in New York City almost 25 years ago. When I first started out, I knew absolutely nothing and it was by the Grace of God that I found out what I was supposed to do, when I was supposed to do it. Fortunately, I did the right things at the right time. When faced with various audits, I had done the right things and passed with flying colors.

Now, 25 years later, I have figured it out. . . . for the most part. I want to share that information with the small business owner who is not aware of what they need to know. . . and doesn't even know how or what to ask.

I named my company People First because I want to do just that, put ALL people first; both the employee and the business owner/employer.

My question is, how do I do that? How do I get the word out there that I am here to help. Because that's exactly what I want to do. Help those who could utilize our services. I truly believe that it is in giving that we receive.

I would love to hear what you think. How can we spread the word that there are people out there who truly care about others and want to make a difference. I welcome comments, suggestions, feedback and input. How can we help others during these difficult economic times?

This is very much true. It is a difficult time for small businesses during these economic times. What I think would be a good idea, is that it is a good time to invest in advertising for these small businesses. Especially since the majority of businesses are not advertising right now, the few that choose to advertise big will have their company stand out in the minds of people when the economy does balance back out. Also, soon there will be a lot of new job opportunities available and many of these may require relocation. If this kind of opportunity arises in your life, contemplate hiring a credible company to assist you with this move. It will leave more time to focus on other important aspects of the job relocation.

Now is the time for companies to look at their staff and identify the best of the best. Reduce staff to a core group and then as the ecomomy wobbles back to full strength, supplement and support the core best employees with contract or temporary help staff. Maximizing the benefit of working with a staffing company makes good business sense. To meet peak demands use temps. To gauge sustainability of any new growth, use contract staffing or long term temporary staffing. Avoid the crush of job seekers responding to ads/postings by skilfully working with a Staffing Specialist, Recruiter or Headhunter. Free up your time to focus on revenue generating functions and leave talent acquisition to the staffing experts. Your best growth partner is a staffing company that you develop and nuture a true staffing partnership. Bring them to the table now, share your pain, and also your vision for the future. Engage in long term HR planning, set expectations, implement progress checking guidelines and make the best of your staffing partner which really should be viewed and treated like an extension (HR Division) of your company. Done correctly, you will have the best talent driving your business success. People First. It Works.
