Blog Post: Unqualified Job Applicants Distract & Prolong The Hiring Process!

I was sitting around with some of my peers at the Florida Staffing Association conference and we were discussing the disconnect between all the people looking for a job and all the recruiters looking for the perfect candidate. It amazes me that with all the people looking for jobs we cant fill all the job orders. At first thought I would think maybe it's becuase job seekers are not qualified, but with a 9.4% national unemployment rate I know that's not the case. There is something else missing....when I post an ad a million people respond but only 5% of the responses are qualified. In a perfect world we would be able to get everyone back to work. I want our community to know that I care and I want to see everyone working. When job seekers apply to jobs they are not qualified for we are distracted from putting them back to work. I would love to see job seekers apply to what they CAN do so I can stay focused on doing what I do; putting them back to work! This is what we staffing professionals have a passion and love for. This is what the conversation with my peers was all about. At the end of the day this is a time to really make a difference. Our services are free to job seekers...we are a resource to our communities!

Wow, don't get me started on this....I have applied for a ridiculous amount of jobs that I was clearly qualified for. I've even received a response from some employers saying they are "going with more qualified applicants" at this time...So in this economy, we have to apply to what we are under and over qualified for in the hopes that one will come thru.

I have applied to jobs where I am under/over qualified. I feel utterly hopeless between all the jobs I apply I'm lucky if I get one interview in the month. There is nothing. I go on foot and on computers to apply, I have also gone to career fairs... what else can I increase in marketing myself out there?

I strongly agree with Ms. Castillo. I have been looking for a job for a while, and so far nothing. I have a Bachelors of architecture from the University of Miami and over 5 years experience. Yes this economy sucks, is a hard cold reality.

yeah boo hoo for you! at least you have a job and if i am not mistaken the job of a recruiter is to weed out applicants and find the right candidate. so if it is such an inconvenience for you i am sure there will be no problem finding a replacement for you.

I also agree with Ms. Castillo because I have been working since I was in High School I have held positions and done things which would no longer be in my current resume. That doesn't mean that I don't have the 1-3 years experience required doing it, it just means I haven't done it in a while. Recruiters don't look at that even if you mention it in your cover letter. At this point I'm applying for things I'm under qualified for and still nobody calls.

I agree with the past five comments and am having same difficulties... HOWEVER, THIS IS CLEARLY AN AD in disguise for this particular staffing agency. Please don't recommend this article.

I have look for work in the banking industry, where I have 10 years of experience, on sales. Bank are posting jobs opening which they don't even have but for their own purpose they have to post jobs opening, The bigest lie is seating in front of a recruiter and go over you qualifications according to recruiter you are the perfect candidate for the position and make you go through back-ground check waste your gas and the expence to park your car. them a week after you received a call from then saying the the position have been removed or taken by another quialified candidate never heard from them again. you try to call back and no answer, it is a sad reality. Hispanic areas are more affected. In the state of Florida and California the highest in unemployment, and the GAME is on. Every body is QUALIFIED to do what they have done before ?What makes the different now? So I question the word QUALIFIED.

I myself have been in search of a position since October of last year. One of the things I find interesting is that this "recruiter", Ann Machado, who infers to the number of "unqualified" applicants as perhaps being uneducated, is herself lacking in that area. Perhaps Ms. Machado needs to return to elementary school to brush up on her spelling and grammar. There is something called "spelling/grammar check" for those otherwise incapable...

I will also comment on the fact that there must be an enormous amount of souls out there searching as I am for employment - not just in a similar capacity as to what they are educated and/or trained for. I was laid off and applied for employment positions that exhibited parallelism to that which I was familiar with. I received absolutely no reply!

To reiterate what the previous poster had to say, what difference does it make what qualifications one has?? Whether we are white, latino, black, yellow, red - we cannot find a f----g job.

Your "unqualified applicants" are an occupational hazard that goes with the territory, and, in this economy, will get worse before bottoming out.
