Job Description

Requisition Number 06117
Department Name: Chemistry - FL
Position Type: Full Time
Position Title Postdoctoral Associate - Disney Lab
Position Summary:

Multiple postdoctoral positions in RNA chemical biology are available in the Disney group in the Department of Chemistry at The Scripps Research Institute. We are committed to each individual’s development to achieve their short term and long term career goals.
Projects with an emphasis on chemical biology center on development of small molecules that target RNA repeat expansions, the causative agent of many neurological and neuromuscular diseases. In particular, the successful candidate will: (i) design high affinity small molecule binders using the structure of the RNA target, our database of RNA-small molecule interactions, and other computational methods; (ii) fully characterize the molecular recognition of the RNA by the small molecule using biophysical methods; (iii) use optimal compounds to study RNA biology in cells and in vivo; and (iv) expand tools available to manipulate RNA in cells. Candidates with demonstrated experience with the following techniques are highly desirable: mammalian cell culture (patient-derived, iPSCs), RNA-seq, splicing isoform analysis by end point RT-PCR and RT-qPCR, RNA-FISH, high throughput screening methods, and conducting experiments in animal models of disease.
Representative publications in this area from our group include: studying the RNA repeats that cause genetically defined ALS and dementia (see: Neuron. 2014 Sep 3;83(5):1043-50); and developing innovative methods to target the RNAs that cause myotonic muscular dystrophy (see: Nat. Chem. Biol. 2017 Feb;13(2):188-193).
